James Johnson-Perkins is a British award-winning artist whose interdisciplinary practice bridges contemporary art, digital culture, and social engagement.
In recent years, he has lived and worked internationally, including in India, Turkey, the USA, Slovakia, Italy, Nepal, Russia, Oman, China, and the UK. He has exhibited widely across Europe, Asia, and North America, including a presentation at Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria, a leading global platform for art, technology, and society. He has also exhibited twice during the prestigious Venice Biennale, marking a significant highlight within his international exhibition history. Most recently, his work was presented at Jaipur Arts Week (2026).
Recent exhibitions include The GenAI Summit at ArtX Gallery, San Francisco and The Palace of Fine Arts, USA, Post Digital Reality at the Video Art International Festival, Austria and Nord Art, Budelsdorf, Germany.
Additional major exhibitions include The Emily Harvey Foundation (Venice, Italy), The Royal College of Art (London, UK), The Centre for Contemporary Art (Glasgow, Scotland), The Chinese European Art Centre (Xiamen, China), Toyota Museum of Modern Art (Toyota City, Japan), Czong Institute for Contemporary Art (South Korea), The Patan Museum (Kathmandu, Nepal), Austin Museum of Digital Art (USA), and The Arts Students League (New York, USA).
In 2025, Johnson-Perkins won an Eaton Award and was longlisted for the Henki Prize. In 2021, he received the Mediterranean Contemporary Art Prize, President’s Award. He was Runner-up for the Alpine Fellowship Visual Arts Prize and an award recipient of the Art Observatory Digital Art Program (Ukraine/UK) and he was also shortlisted for the Passpartout Photo Prize (Italy).
In 2024/25 he was Artist in Residence at Merz, Scotland and La Maison De Barbara, Ayvalik, Turkey. In 2021 he undertook digital residencies with The Belgrade Arts Studio, Serbia and Correlation Contemporary, Peru.
Alongside his exhibition practice, Johnson-Perkins has developed participatory and large-scale public art initiatives, including attempts to break a world record for the largest robotics participation event in Poole (Kube) and West Bromwich (The Public). He has facilitated large-scale Giant Play/Lego exhibitions and workshops across the UK, including Durham DLI, King’s Lynn Arts Centre, Kube Gallery (Poole), and The Public (West Bromwich). He has also worked with the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art (Gateshead) as an Arts Facilitator, delivering extensive education and community-based programmes. His participatory projects have also extended internationally, including the creation of a large-scale Giant Twister events in China and at the Free Arts Festival in Taiwan.
